FIFA Bans Ex-Spanish Football Federation Chief Luis Rubiales for Three Years

By Azeezat Okunlola | Oct 30, 2023

Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has received a three-year ban from all football-related activities by FIFA. This decision follows an incident in which Rubiales kissed forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain's Women's World Cup final win over England.

Hermoso, who maintained that the kiss was not consensual, later filed a legal complaint against Rubiales, sparking a significant outcry. In response to the controversy, Rubiales stepped down from his role in September.

Rubiales initially tried to continue in his position, but he eventually stepped down as the president of the Spanish federation and a vice president of UEFA last month. He is now facing consequences for violating article 13 of its disciplinary code, which pertains to offensive behaviour and breaches of fair play principles. The ban is related to the events during the Women's World Cup final in August 2023, which led to Rubiales' initial suspension for 90 days.

FIFA emphasized its commitment to upholding the integrity of all individuals and ensuring proper standards of conduct while acknowledging that the decision is subject to possible appeal.

The incident had cast a shadow over Spain's historic victory in Sydney, Australia. A criminal complaint was lodged against Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion, leading to his ban from approaching within 200 meters of Hermoso. He has consistently denied the allegations.

Rubiales' actions resulted in widespread criticism and led to a boycott by the majority of the World Cup-winning squad until changes were implemented within the football federation. Furthermore, World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda was dismissed in September and is currently under investigation in connection with the criminal case against Rubiales.
