FIFA Women's World Cup: Switzerland Defeats The Philippines in 2-0 Match
Switzerland defeated the Philippines 2-0 at Forsyth Barr Stadium in New Zealand on Thursday, to continue the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The Philippines, one of first eight qualifiers to the World Cup, kicked off its campaign on Thursday with the starting lineup mostly filled with American players.
Tahnai Annis captained the Philippine squad, which included great defender Angela Beard (who had previously played for Australia) and unparalleled leading scorer Quinley Quezada.
The Philippines got off to a great start, as it appeared that Katrina Guillou had scored their first World Cup goal after 16 minutes, but the goal was quickly nullified due to offside.

After Guillou's shot was ruled out, however, the Swiss stepped up their game and put the Philippines on the back foot, with chances by Geraldine Reuteler and Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic being missed from close range.
Finally, the hard work of Inka Grings' squad paid off when, following a VAR review, they were awarded a penalty after Jessika Cowart mistimed her clearance and kicked Coumba Sow in the ankles.
The forward for Paris St. Germain, Bachmann, gave her team the lead with a coolly placed shot into the bottom left corner past an unmoving Olivia McDaniel just before halftime.
A double stop by McDaniel on Crnogorcevic and Sow led to Switzerland's second goal of the game, scored by Piubel on a tap-in after Switzerland had dominated the second half.
McDaniel's late surge into the Swiss penalty area was not enough to help Alen Stajcic's squad score their first goal at the World Cup.
