Japan Advances to the Quarterfinals Following A 3-1 Win Against Norway

On Saturday, the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup continued at Regional Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, with a round of 16 contest between Japan and Norway. 

Japan scored 11 goals in the group stage and won Group C with a  three game sweep.

Hinata Miyazawa, who has scored a tournament-high five goals, helped her side to its fourth consecutive victory on Saturday morning, advancing them to the semifinals. 

Within seconds of the opening whistle, Japan's offence was putting the pressure on and nearly came up with a go-ahead score.

Futoshi Ikeda, Japan's coach, was noticeably thrilled with his team's opening energy, which left Norway's defence trying to stop it.

An own goal by the Norwegian defence was the result of persistent pressure from Japan, but the Scandinavians rallied thanks to a header by Guro Reiten.

Although Japan only scored once in the first half, it had numerous opportunities to boost its goal total, as it is accustomed to doing.

In the 50th minute, Japan finally broke through when Risa Shimzu scored after a series of deft passes opened up space for her to take a low shot.

Karina Saevik had Norway's best opportunity to level the game in the second half, but she missed to the left of the goal.

With her spectacular leaping save in overtime, Ayaka Yamashita ensured that her team would maintain their 3-1 lead.

The winner of Sunday's match between the United States and Sweden will face Japan next.
