LOREAL-UNESCO: Unveiling the Women in Science Young Talent Search in South Africa
The Women in Science Young Talent Search, co-sponsored by the L'Oréal Foundation and UNESCO, has launched its sixth round in South Africa.
Young, outstanding women researchers under the age of 40 from a wide range of scientific fields are encouraged to apply including engineering, technology, the environment, and formal and biological sciences.
In recognition of women's outstanding achievements in science, the programme seeks to encourage innovation in vital sectors.
“At L’Oréal, we are anchored in beauty backed by science, because we deeply believe in the power of science to change the world. award: that power, we center the crucial role women play in advancing critical innovation,” says Michelle Gololo, manager of corporate affairs and engagement at L’Oréal South Africa.
“For Women in Science South Africa National Young Talents Programme, in collaboration with Unesco, is more than just an award; it is a commitment to fostering diversity, excellence, and groundbreaking research in the scientific community,” she says.
To that end, L'Oréal is actively seeking applications from women scientists who demonstrate an unwavering dedication to promoting scientific research and innovation.
The doctorate awards this year are valued at R80,000 each, and the postdoctoral grants at R160,000 each, so the successful candidates can continue their critical and innovative work while receiving substantial support for their studies.
In an industry where women make up just 30% of researchers, having more women at the forefront of innovation is essential for fostering inclusive innovation.
With almost R3 million in funding, the programme has supported 32 exceptional researchers since its start, allowing them to conduct ground-breaking research. This programme promotes diversity and excellence in South Africa by continuing to address the region's large gender gap.
The deadline to submit an application is May 19, 2024.
