The English club Sheffield United has confirmed the death of midfielder Maddy Cusack, 27. The midfielder reportedly passed away on September 20. Cusack was named a team captain just last month and signed a new one-year contract with the club.

Since joining Sheffield United in 2019, the player has played in more than 100 games for the club, making her the longest-tenured player for The Blades. Maddy Cusack was not only a star on the women's team, but also a marketing executive for the club's Bramall Lane offices.

As well as being a respected player for the women's team, Maddy Cusack also worked in the offices at Bramall Lane as a marketing executive.

Sheffield United chief executive Stephen Bettis commented: “This is heartbreaking news for everyone at Bramall Lane. Maddy had a unique position of being part of a number of teams at Sheffield United and was popular with everyone that she came into contact with. Her personality and professionalism made her a credit to her family – she will be sadly missed. Whilst taking in the news and moving forward, the Club will offer as much support as possible to Maddy’s family, friends and colleagues.”

They also wrote on their X page:

Her face will be familiar to many, Maddy was a popular member of the Blades family and her passing last week has stunned everyone at S2, who share the grief of the Cusack family and, of course, Maddy’s friends and team-mates.

Maddy first arrived at the club in 2019 and chalked up over 100 appearances for Sheffield United Women, replicating her energy on the pitch with her love for marketing in the offices at Bramall Lane.

The amount of tributes and messages of condolence that have been received following the sad news is a measure of the regard she was held in, not just in football circles.

It is difficult to put into words the esteem she was held in, the whole football fraternity has come out to pay their respect and Sheffield United appreciate the solidarity. The club is devastated to lose a much-loved sister but she will not be forgotten.
