A woman simply identified as Sadiya, wife of one Ibrahim Yunusa Bature, has reportedly died in hospital after he locked her up in the house for an entire year without providing her with any food.

Daily Post reported that Hadiza, Sadiya's mother, rescued her last Sunday after Ibrahim denied her food for a year.

She found that he only gave her Kunu (a native drink) to help her get by. Ibrahim also locked the door to her room to keep others out.

Sadiya is a mother of four who hails from Kano State but resides in Nguru, Yobe State, northeastern Nigeria.

After reporting feeling uneasy upon hearing her daughter's voice over the phone, Hadiza claimed that she had travelled to Nguru from Kano to see her, only to be surprised to find her in a life-threatening position upon her arrival.

Sadiya's mother hurried her to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano for treatment. The Yobe State Police Command had confirmed the arrest of Sadiya’s husband, Ibrahim Yunusa.

“The motive of this act is not known, but police have arrested Mr Ibrahim Yunusa and handed him over to the magistrate court,” DSP Dungus confirmed.

Following this trending incident of inhuman treatment of the victim, a coalition of 56 women and children rights activists have mobilized resources to pursue the case until justice is served to the victim.

Hadiza alleged that Ibrahim is a relative of Mustapha Yusuf Maihaja, the former director general of the National Emergency Management Agency, and Yusuf Yunusa, the Nigerian ambassador to Kenya.
