Saudi Hosts First-ever Women's International Football Tournament
A four-team women's international friendly tournament is being hosted in Saudi Arabia for the first time.
Prince Saud bin Jalawi Stadium in Al Khobar, Eastern Region, is where the championship, which began on Wednesday and will end on January 19, is being held.
In the first game, Saudi Arabia beat Mauritius 1-0, and Pakistan beat Comoros 1-0.
Lamia Bahaian, supervisor of the women's football department at the Saudi Arabia Football Association, said, "The hosting of this tournament in Saudi Arabia marks a milestone moment not just for women's football and the growth of the game in the kingdom, but for football itself."
“It is an event that can play a big role in inspiring millions of young girls across the country and the Asian continent to become involved in the beautiful game.”
The department hopes to further develop the women's first team they formed last year by hosting the tournament. Last week, FIFA officially accredited Anoud Al Asmari, a Saudi woman, as the country's first female referee.
