Woman Arrested in Connection with Wimbledon Collision Released Under Investigation
Upon investigation, a woman who was detained in connection with the fatal collision of a Land Rover into an end-of-term tea party at a Wimbledon Common preparatory school, resulting in the deaths of two eight-year-old girls, has been released. Earlier, the driver had been granted bail by the police.
A spokeswoman for the Met Police said Thursday that an individual from Wimbledon, aged 46, who was detained at the scene and is presently being investigated for allegedly causing death by hazardous driving, has been released.
A person released under investigation is not subject to the same time constraints, dates, or conditions as someone released on bail.
On 6 July, at about 7:30 in the morning, a Land Rover careened over a fence and into a building at The Study Prep school on Camp Road, killing Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau.
A seven-month-old child was among many others who were transported to the hospital and afterwards discharged.
The collision prompted the dispatch of around 30 police vehicles and 15 ambulances, who were all sent to the site as an emergency.
A heartfelt tribute to Selena, who was "loved by everyone" and described as a "intelligent and cheeky girl," was shared by her family shortly after her passing.
A member of Nuria's family said that their loved one "embodied joy, kindness and generosity" and that she was the light of their lives.
In November, Sajjad Butt, the father of the infant, stated to the BBC that the couple is left with a "deep in a hole" and is having difficulty finding any sense of purpose.
Located on Wimbledon Common, the school serves girls in the fourth through eleventh grades. Tragically, the collision occurred less than a mile from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, when the Wimbledon tennis championship was in progress.
