Following her unexpected appearance on a reality game show, where she won a substantial sum of money, a woman's lover viciously murdered her.

The debut contestant on the Peruvian "The Moment of Truth" was a teenager by the name of Ruth Thalia Sayas Sanchez.

The premise of the TV game show was posing a series of 21 personal questions across six progressively challenging stages.

Using a lie detector to gauge whether or not contestants were being truthful, the cash reward could be theirs for the taking.

As soon as host Beto Ortiz asked Ruth a very personal question, Ruth found herself squarely in the spotlight.

"Do you think your parents would be proud of you if they knew what you did for a living?"

The woman appeared to be in a precarious situation while her parents, who thought she was working at a contact centre, watched from the studio audience. The question itself didn't appear detrimental.

Obviously, she could advance in the game by speaking the truth, but doing so would break the trust she had with her parents. On the other hand, she could lose the game by lying.

The Rotten Mango podcast's Stephanie Soo brought attention to the magnitude of the reward, saying, "The final prize is $13,500 however, in comparison to Peruvian minimum wage, that would be a few years' worth of work." This piqued the curiosity of viewers throughout the world.

In light of this, Ruth came clean about being a nightclub hostess and her acceptance of money in exchange for sexual favours on two separate occasions.

But that's not all; she also stated that her relationship with her partner was temporary until "something better turns up."

She won a substantial sum of 15,000 Peruvian Soles (£3,250) as a result of her ruthless honesty, which she then used to leave the show.

Tragically, eight weeks later, Ruth was discovered dead. When detectives examined her body, they found traces of strangling and poison in her system.

Russell Romero, who was dating Ruth at the time, admitted to the murder and was later arrested.

He murdered the teen on the outskirts of Lima on September 11, 2012, with the help of a relative, and investigators discovered later that he had injected her with a sleeping pill.

In the aftermath of this occurrence, the TV show was met with criticism from viewers who held it responsible for the murder, claiming that the murder was triggered by her sex life disclosures.

This, however, was swiftly denied by her family, who insisted that the show was not to blame.

"This television program has absolutely nothing to do with it," Ruth's uncle, Freddy Sanchez Rojas stated.

Show presenter Beto Ortiz added, "What they are doing is giving an alibi to the defenders of a soulless criminal, because they are taking away his responsibility by saying that television creates monsters."
